A different astrological perspective

The sidereal zodiac

Vedic astrology generally uses the sidereal zodiac, relating planetary positions to the constellational framework rather than the tropical zodiac commonly used in Western astrology.

Nakshatras

The lunar mansions, known as nakshatras, add another layer of detail to the interpretation of planets and especially the Moon.

Timing and life periods

Jyotish includes timing techniques such as dashas, which are used to examine different planetary periods and changing themes throughout life.

What is Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology is commonly used as an English term for Jyotish, an Indian astrological tradition with a long history and its own methods of chart interpretation.

Although it works with familiar elements such as planets, signs and houses, its calculations, emphasis and interpretive techniques can differ considerably from those commonly encountered in modern Western astrology.

For someone already familiar with their Western chart, this can reveal a noticeably different astrological perspective.

Why can your Vedic chart look different?

One of the first things people notice is that placements in a Vedic chart may differ from those in a Western tropical chart.

This is largely because the two systems use different zodiac reference points. As a result, your Sun, Moon, Ascendant or other planets may appear in different signs.

That does not mean one chart has been calculated incorrectly. They are being viewed through different astrological frameworks.

The importance of the Moon and nakshatras

Nakshatras divide the zodiac into 27 lunar mansions and play an important role within Jyotish. Each has its own symbolism and qualities, adding detail beyond the twelve zodiac signs.

The Moon's nakshatra is particularly significant and can provide another perspective on emotional patterns, instinctive responses and how experiences are processed internally.

Understanding planetary periods

Vedic astrology does not only consider the placements in a birth chart. Timing systems can also be used to explore how different planetary influences become more prominent during particular periods of life.

The dasha system is one of the best-known examples. Rather than treating life as static, it provides a framework for examining how the emphasis of the chart can shift over time.

Questions about Vedic astrology

Is Vedic astrology the same as Western astrology?

No. There are similarities, but Vedic and Western astrology use different frameworks and interpretive traditions. One of the clearest differences is that Vedic astrology generally uses the sidereal zodiac, while modern Western astrology commonly uses the tropical zodiac.

Why is my Vedic zodiac sign different?

Because the sidereal and tropical zodiacs use different reference points, a planet can appear in one sign in a Western chart and another in a Vedic chart. The exact difference depends on the chart and the ayanamsha used.

What is an ayanamsha?

An ayanamsha is the adjustment used to calculate sidereal planetary positions in relation to the tropical zodiac. Different ayanamsha systems exist, which can sometimes produce small differences in a Vedic chart.

What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions used in Vedic astrology. Nakshatras provide an additional level of interpretation alongside signs, planets and houses.
